Markus,

I just got this error posting a reply to Beth's blog. Then I refreshed the home page and came back here to post this:

phpBB : Critical Error

Error doing DB query userdata row fetch

DEBUG MODE

SQL Error : 1053 Server shutdown in progress

SELECT u.*, s.* FROM phpbb_sessions s, phpbb_users u WHERE s.session_id = 'aeb393df1c74255617d1a22a4335add1' AND u.user_id = s.session_user_id

Line : 321
File : sessions.php

That's a regular server hiccup (database software going down) which usually cures itself (or is cured by the hoster's tech monkeys) within 20 minutes.

I have not seen any more hacking this week (last week it seemed to reoccur about every 3 days) so I guess the problem is solved. It seems to have been a bot software doing brute force attack and succeding on one of the passwords which allowed it to modify the html code on the server. Fortunately it seems to have been a dumb bot who broke the forum with the modifications, so as far as I can tell no harm was done.

A human attacker would have been able to get deeper into the system with some effort, but the main idea seems to have been to make people (forum visitors) visit other websites in order to make money from generating visitors (via advertising/affiliate programs), but as said, they code broke the forum entirely (I had to restore backups from days before the attack to the get the stuff fixed), so there were no visitors to redirect.

It seems the forum is currently not sending notifications to email when receiving PMs (or maybe it does but erratically, or maybe they end up in a spam blockers tummy).

I'll check into this tomorrow and will see if I can find/fix it, meanwhile have a look at the forum menu (if you have mail in the inbox it will show the number of messages there).

When you log in the first time with a new PM you should also get a browser pop up but some browsers suppress it, to don't count on it (or make sure you have this site enabled for popups).

It must be broken. That's the only logical way to explain not getting any love letters from Sue.

I just spent some time with a bluehost (our hosting company) tech online. He confirmed the problem but couldn't solve it himself, so he'll pass it up the chain to the more knowledgable forces at bluehost..com

I'll keep you posted when I hear something new.

Forum notifications should be working again. (We had to change the mail subject of the notifications a bit, because they got caught in an outgoing spam filter.)

Interesting remark. It didn't even occur to me to look for the imagery.

What I'd come up with spontaneously would be that the difference (between having those notifications work or not) is that one way you have the answers pushed into your face (inbox), without notifications you check for them when you are here. I also noticed that the lack of notifications slows down PM communication.

We too big for 'em? Did we blow up their server? Too many of us? Too powerful?

here's the full note:

Dear Bluehost Customer,

Bluehost has started migrating your account (blueflas).
Below you will find important migration details. Please refer to your ticket
number 0 for any specific details.

Although Bluehost will do everything possible to ensure that your
migration goes quickly and smoothly; it is important to understand
that your account will be moving from one physical server location to
another. During migration the IP address attached to your domain name
will be changed from your old server IP to your new server IP. This will
cause a temporary interruption in email, ftp, and the visibility
of your website.

This window of interruption occurs because most Internet Service Providers
(ISP's) take 24-72 hours to clear their Cache.

Although this window could last approximately 24-72 hours it typically
only lasts 48 hours before your site becomes fully functional again. Your
web browser (IE, Firefox, Netscape) has a Cached version of your site
stored on your local system. In some cases it will help if you clear your
browser cache. For more Information about Cache and clearing your browser
Cache please review our article on:
http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=495

If after waiting 48 hours and clearing your browsers Cache, your
website has not begun functioning normally please contact our World
Class U.S. based Support Team by phone:

Bluehost Support:

* Main Line: (888) 401-4678
* Outside U.S: (801) 765-9400
Support Questions: Press 2

Important Migration Details:

Your username and cPanel password will remain the same.

* Migration Date: October 15, 2009

* Migration Start Time: 01:00 PM MST

* Migration End Time: (estimate) 11:00 PM MST
* Old Server IP: 74.220.219.129
