I'm having trouble using my private messages. All of my email out end up in my outbox, presumably unsent (or they'd be in my sentbox…?).

Could you please tell me how I can free my messages from the outbox and send them on their way?

The recipient frees them from there … by reading them. Until then they remain in the outbox and you can even edit/delete them there.
